Your child is a third grader!! Wow! When did that happen, right? It can seem like quite a jump from 2nd grade to 3rd grade, but don’t worry! I am here to help you and your child every step of the way and make this a smooth transition. 

 As your child’s teacher, my goal is to help your child to be an independent and responsible learner, as well as, to show him or her how to make responsible choices. To accomplish this goal, I do expect students to make the most of their class time. If work is not completed during class time, I do expect that it be completed at home and returned to school by the next day. 

That being said, I value the time you have together as a family each night. Being mindful of your quality time, I do my best to provide plenty of time and assistance to complete work here at school so that you are free to spend your nights together. 

The National Education Association recommends the “10-minute rule” – 10 minutes of homework per grade level per night. In third grade, I expect students to read 20 minutes per night and study the weekly spelling words. Reading should be an enjoyable time. Feel free to use that time to read together too! On Tuesdays, students will get a homework packet to help practice spelling words & other grammar skills. Students will have plenty of time in class but will bring home the rest to complete by Thursday if it’s not finished. 

Work that is assigned should be meaningful. It is meant to reinforce what is being taught in the classroom. It also teaches fundamental skills of time management, organization and responsibility.
